Most people think railway security is about cameras and barriers. There’s a whole other dimension most never consider.
Chemical. Biological. Radiological. Nuclear.
We took a significant step forward in addressing it as part of the CBRNe4rail project, a pan-European initiative co-funded by the European Commission.
Here’s what we did:
- We analysed the findings from our five study visits stations: Warsaw, Venice, Malmö, Grosuplje, and San Sebastián.
- Different countries. Different infrastructures. Different cultures of security.
- Incredibly rich insights.
From those findings, we did something we’re proud of: SAFE, together with the NBC School, defined training courses for the CBRNe courses that will be delivered at the NBC School in Rieti in September and October 2026.
Real training. Real railway staff. Real scenarios.
And then we went further.
We designed the scenario and procedures that will be inside a virtual reality simulation so that responders can rehearse what no one wants to ever experience in real life.
What strikes us most about this project is the people around the table.
Security experts, first responders, railway operators, and researchers coming from different realities across Europe.
But all united by one belief: Preparedness is not a cost. It’s a form of respect for the people who pass through our stations every day.
