The OPerational FAcility (OPFA) Preparatory Phase of the OPFA-WASTE project is ready to support four on-going transnational investigations on Illicit Waste Trafficking!
The OPFA Waste support scheme provides financial assistance on the implementation and successful completion of police operations. The Preparatory Phase, open to project partners, is designed to technically test the Facility in view of the Action Phase – open from March 2021 to all Law Enforcement Agencies fighting illicit waste trafficking.
On 28 July 2020 the OPFA-WASTE Core Team of Experts, including environmental, financial and organised crime specialists from the Carabinieri Corps, the Romanian Environmental Guard, the Latvian State Police and external qualified professionals have analysed the submitted proposals under the different areas of competence.
All the criminal investigations presented in this phase were assessed eligible for support, responding to the binding criteria set up by the OPFA-WASTE team in the Facility Terms of Reference. The four selected cases encompass different aspects of environmental crime and are oriented to effectively combat the current threats within European Region, targeting EU and extra-EU waste traffickers nowadays operative.
While Covid-19 situation keeps adding uncertainty to activities implementation, the OPFA-WASTE team is eager to switch to full operational mode, by improving police cooperation and networking among specialized law enforcement actors world-wide, striving to achieve a first set of concrete results by the end of 2020.
