The first Operational Workshop for the update of investigative methodologies on Illicit Waste Trafficking took place on video conference on 29-30 October 2020. Thanks to the active participation of Europol, specialized police officers from 12 different European countries, as well to three ISF project teams, the workshop was a success!
On DAY 1, the first working group explored solutions to strengthen enforcement with focus on new frontiers of patrimonial investigations in the field of Illicit Waste Trafficking. Thanks to valuable insights from Europol AP Envicrime, EnvicrimeNet President, Spanish Guardia Civil SEPRONA, Direction for Coordination of Police Bodies of Bosnia &Herzegovina, Danish National Police, German Federal Criminal Police, Italian Carabinieri Corps, Romanian National Environmental Guard, Court of Appeal of Costanta and Latvian State Police financial investigations were framed in the context of environmental crimes at European level.
The second working group, attended by Europol AP Envicrime, French OCLAESP, Austrian Criminal Intelligence Service and North Macedonian Customs Administration, Italian Carabinieri Corps, Romanian National Environmental Guard, Court of Appeal of Costanta, Latvian State Police and guided by the OPFA WASTE project team of experts, exchanged views on how to lead inspections and controls to effective criminal investigations.
The outcome of the technical sessions represents the backbone for the set of guidelines to update investigative methodologies in the field of Illicit Waste Trafficking, upgrading the current approach to higher standards.
DAY 2 represented the setting for the first ISF projects coordination meeting (Call ENV 2018). OPFA WASTE, STRiKE and Ambitus project surveys preliminary outcomes were discussed and upcoming activities presented, with an eye on avoiding duplication of efforts and establishing positive synergies.
