On Tuesday 12th and Friday 15th of January 2021 the first problem solving workshop was carried out upon initiative of the Carabinieri Corps, OPFA WASTE project’s leading partner.
The workshop, delivered in two separate modules, was funded in the context of the Operational Facility – Preparatory Phase of the OPFA WASTE project and carried out on video conference. Over 50 police officers from many EU Member States participated to the online sessions, together with the project’ supporting partner Europol, contributing to the discussion with technical insights from the project’s EnviCrime partners.
The first module, delivered by a specialized environmental engineer, focused on the use of innovative tools to support the fight against environmental crime. More specifically, it provided an overview on the Geographical Information Systems and specific notions regarding the access to geospatial information, applied to law enforcement operations.
The second module, aimed at giving an overview on remote sensing, saw a high qualified engineeer outlining the main uses of sensors and data, as well as their concrete application in the context of criminal investigations and police operations.
This problem solving workshop, highly successful thanks to the participation of techical experts from several different police forces, aimed at transferring to dedicated law enforcement practitioners the fundamental principles on the use of innovative tools in support to criminal investigations, while at the same time offering the chance to share mutual expertise.
The Operational Facility, only accessible for funding to consortium partners in its Preparatory Phase, will enter the Action Phase in February 2021, extending the opportunity to receive financial support to all EU MS Law Enforcement Agencies fighting environmental crimes.
