On 21 May 2021 the OPFA WASTE project police partners participated to the 4 Networks Conference “Towards a more effective environmental enforcement”. The Conference, hosted by the LIFE+ SATEC project, brings together each year the 4 most important European Networks active in combating environmental crime more efficiently by joining forces, namely IMPEL (environmental regulators), EnviCrimeNet (Law Enforcement Agencies), ENPE (environmental prosecutors) and EUFJE (judges).
The Plenary Event took place in the morning, focusing on two key topics: the revision of the Directive 2008/99/EC on environmental crime and the next EU multi-annual Policy Cycle to tackle Organized and Serious International Crime (2022-2025).
In the afternoon 5 parallel workshops were held, focusing on:
- BIOVAL (developing a tool for the evaluation of damage to species in court)
- Shipment of Waste Enforcement Actions (SWEAP) project
- Illegal plastic waste shipment
- Wildlife crime, including a recent case study
- F-gasses and biodiesel fraud
The Carabinieri Corps, invited as guest speakers, focussed their intervention on the EU multi-annual Policy Cycle to tackle Organized and Serious International Crime: current situation and options for next Cycle.
The 4 Networks Day has led to 2 Statements of the 4 Networks on the above mentioned key topics; the ECD and the EU Policy Cycle. This event represented a crucial forum to strengthen the network of public sector practitioners against environmental crimes.
